What Is a Certificate of Analysis?

A Certificate of Analysis (CoA) is an official document issued by an independent, accredited laboratory that verifies the identity, purity, and safety of a specific batch of a product. It is the gold standard for quality assurance in the supplement and research chemical industries.

Every CoA from Southern Aminos is generated by an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited third-party laboratory — not by us, and not by our suppliers. This independence is critical because it eliminates any conflict of interest and ensures the results are objective and trustworthy.

Each CoA is unique to a specific batch (lot number) and documents the exact test results for that production run. If you have a Southern Aminos product, the lot number printed on the label should match one of the lot numbers listed above.

What’s Tested

Every product batch undergoes a comprehensive panel of analytical tests. Here’s what each test measures and why it matters:

HPLC Purity Analysis

High-Performance Liquid Chromatography separates and quantifies the components of the sample. This tells us exactly what percentage of the sample is the target compound versus impurities or degradation products. Our minimum acceptable purity is 99.0%.

Mass Spectrometry (MS) — Identity

Mass spectrometry measures the molecular weight of the compound by ionizing it and analyzing the mass-to-charge ratio of the resulting ions. This confirms that the compound is exactly what it’s supposed to be — not a substitute, analog, or completely different substance.

Heavy Metal Screening (ICP-MS)

Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry detects trace levels of heavy metals including lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and others. Results must be below the limits set by USP <232> and ICH Q3D guidelines.

Microbial Contamination

Tests for total aerobic microbial count, yeast, mold, and specified pathogens (E. coli, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, Salmonella). Products must meet USP <61> and <62> requirements for dietary supplements.

Residual Solvent Analysis (GC-HS)

Gas Chromatography with Headspace sampling detects and quantifies any residual solvents left over from the manufacturing process. Results must comply with ICH Q3C Class 2 and Class 3 solvent limits.

Water Content (Karl Fischer Titration)

Measures the exact water content of the sample. Excessive moisture can affect product stability and accuracy of dosing. Results are reported as a percentage by weight.

pH & Appearance

For reconstituted solutions, pH is measured to ensure it falls within the expected range for the compound. Visual appearance (color, clarity, particulate matter) is also documented.

Endotoxin Testing (LAL Assay)

The Limulus Amebocyte Lysate test detects bacterial endotoxins that can cause serious reactions. Required for research-grade peptides. Results are reported in EU/mL and must meet USP <85> limits.

How to Read Your COA

Here’s a breakdown of the key sections you’ll find on every Southern Aminos Certificate of Analysis:

1

Product Information

Product name, form (lyophilized powder, capsule, cream, etc.), size/weight, and the unique lot number. Verify that the lot number on your product label matches the lot number on the CoA.

2

Laboratory Information

Name, address, and accreditation number of the testing laboratory. Look for ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation — this confirms the lab meets international standards for competence and impartiality.

3

Test Results Table

A table listing each test performed, the specification (acceptable range), the actual result, and a pass/fail determination. Every result should show “Pass” or “Conforms” — if any result shows “Fail,” the batch was rejected.

4

Chromatograms & Spectra

The raw analytical data — HPLC chromatogram showing the purity peak, mass spectrum showing the molecular ion, and other instrumental outputs. These allow independent verification of the results by any qualified analytical chemist.

5

Signatures & Dates

The date the tests were performed, the date the CoA was issued, and the signature of the responsible analyst or laboratory director. This establishes accountability and traceability.

Pro tip: The most important thing to check is that the lot number on your product matches the lot number on the CoA, and that all test results show “Pass” or “Conforms.” If the lot numbers don’t match, the CoA is not valid for your product — contact us immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

The lot number is printed on the product label, typically near the bottom of the label alongside the expiration date and manufacturing date. It follows the format “SA-XXX-YYYY-NNN” (e.g., SA-BPC-2025-001). If you can’t locate it, check the bottom of the container or the sealed outer packaging.

CoAs are posted after testing is complete and the batch has been released for sale. If your lot number isn’t listed, it may still be in the testing process (typically 5–10 business days after manufacturing). If it’s been more than 2 weeks since your purchase and your CoA still isn’t available, please contact us with your order number and we’ll provide it directly.

Yes. Our CoAs are freely available and may be shared. However, they are specific to the lot number listed on the document and should not be represented as applying to any other product, batch, or supplier’s products. Misrepresentation of CoAs is a serious matter and may violate federal and state laws.

All testing is performed by independent, ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratories that have no financial relationship with Southern Aminos or our suppliers. We select labs based on their accreditation status, expertise in peptide and amino acid analysis, turnaround time, and reputation in the industry. The specific lab name and accreditation number are listed on each CoA.

It means that 99.4% of the material in the vial is the target compound (e.g., BPC-15), as measured by HPLC. The remaining 0.6% consists of minor impurities that are common in peptide synthesis (truncated sequences, deletion sequences, etc.) and are well within acceptable limits. For comparison, many supplement products on the market contain significantly lower purity levels, and some are not tested at all.

Yes. Every batch of every product — without exception — is sent to a third-party laboratory for the full test panel described above. We do not use skip-lot testing, statistical sampling, or any other shortcut. If a batch hasn’t been tested and passed, it doesn’t ship. Period.
